Just how much more Indian production will switch over to vannamei from black tiger is a major story to watch in the shrimp sector this year, says a US-based buyer.

In 2010, Indian packers exported 66 million pounds of shrimp to the United States.

In 2011, this figure jumped to 106 million pounds, a 60 percent increase in just one year. 

Most of this increase was due to the switch from black tiger to white shrimp production, said Ernie Wayland, executive vice president with importer International Marketing Specialists (IMS).
