Higher salmon prices have led to a sharp drop in salmon purchases in Norway’s two largest salmon markets, the European Union (EU) and Russia.

That was the message from Kontali Analyse’s executive chairman Lars Liabo in his address at the annual meeting of the Norwegian Seafood Federation (FHL) Nordnorsk Havbrukslag in Tromso, Norway, this week.

Supply of Atlantic salmon to the EU dropped 9 percent to 836,000 metric tons whole fish equivalent (WFE) in 2013, according to Liabo’s estimate.

Supply direct from Norway was down 10 percent to 686,000 metric tons.
