Netherlands-based animal breeding company Hendrix Genetics and New Zealand-based Plant & Food Research are co-developing an image-based process that will make it easier to identify fish with good characteristics for breeding purposes.
The system uses "species-specific distinguishing features, such as visual patterning -- akin to a fingerprint -- to identify individuals and track their growth over time."
The conventional method of data collection involves weighing scales, which can impact animal welfare.
The technology will first be tested on trout.
