Five associations representing the majority of the groundfish trawlers in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) will suspend fishing next week to lobby the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) to institute a quota system for the area similar to those set up in other parts of the state.
Representatives from Alaska Groundfish Data Bank, the Midwater Trawlers Cooperative, the Alaska Whitefish Trawlers Association and the Peninsula Fishermen's Coalition said Thursday some 50 fishermen would pull their nets and several would travel to Portland, Oregon for next week's NPFMC council meeting to give their input on what they say is an unfair and unsafe management system.
