Norway-based Grieg Seafood is nearing the end of construction on a new smolt facility in the United Kingdom's Shetland Islands, marking the company’s first venture into smolt production in the country.
“The biggest advantage is that we get better smolts, so better quality,” Grieg CEO Morten Vike told IntraFish. He also predicts fewer mortalities.
Once at full capacity, the facility will be able to produce 600 metric tons of smolts and supply the entire capacity of its farms in the Shetlands, which is 20,000 metric tons, Vike said.
