For longer than the six-plus years I’ve worked at IntraFish, some environmental groups have screamed and shouted to anyone who will listen about the evils of growing salmon in open-net pens.
They escape and mingle with wild salmon populations, eventually destroying those pure salmon. The chemicals used to prevent and kill diseases on the farmed fish pollute the environment and harm waterways, fish, birds and other species, and eventually the humans who eat those fish, they say.
"Why can’t they grow their salmon in land-based tanks and use growing systems that don’t harm the environment?" they ask.
Along
