The downturn compared to 2007 was almost 260,000 metric tons, but 2007 was an exceptionally high year with catches of one million metric tons, according to Norwegian consultancy Kontali Analyse’s salmon report.
Annual catches during the last decade have been between 800,000 metric tons and 900,000 metric tons. Kontali statistics trace back to 1980, and in that period catches have never been as high as they were in 2007.
The leading salmon fishing nations are the United States, Russia and Japan, with a gap to Canada in fourth place.
