Each year, the experts at the Groundfish Forum produce detailed estimates of the supply for the major whitefish species for the coming year. Last year, supply dipped on slight declines in cod, saithe and hake, and haddock's continued low volumes kept the overall outlook low.
So far, the picture is mixed this year -- haddock quotas will climb, cod will hold steady. The New Zealand hoki quota was reduced by 10,000 metric tons recently.
But with roughly 40 percent of the world's groundfish supply coming from Alaska pollock, the picture hinges largely on what members of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC) sets as a total quota, and what volumes Russia decides to allow.
