The global production of farmed Atlantic salmon spiked in 2012, led by strong increases in both Norway and Chile.

Total global production, in live weight, whole-fish equivalents (WFE), reached 1.972 metric tons -- a 22 percent increase over 2011.

The additional 353,000 metric tons produced is one of the largest year-on-year increases ever, topping even huge global spike in 319,000 metric tons.

Norway led the increase in production, with 178,000 metric tons of additional production taking the total production to 1.183 million metric tons.
