Hans-Jurgen Matern, vice president of corporate responsibility at the Metro Group in Germany, blasted the proliferation of eco-labels and certification schemes currently on the market claiming there is no obvious benefit in having so many.
“We [retailers] are paying more for them but a lot of consumers don’t see the value in eco-labels,” he said during a panel debate on sustainability at last week’s NASF conference.
“We have to find a better way to be valuable that gives benefits to everyone. If most are not paying more then we cannot increase prices for certifications.”
