The European Union's ban on fishery imports from Sri Lanka over illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) is having a significant impact on fresh tuna in the European market, with prices soaring as much as 60 percent since it kicked in on Jan. 15.
“It’s very, very tough out there," Laky Zervudachi, director of sustainability at United Kingdom-based Direct Seafoods, told IntraFish.
“Sri Lanka losing its ability to export has caused a huge impact in Europe. Limiting [us] to the Maldivian fisheries means the price has escalated dramatically.
