Though a must, fresh fish counters at supermarkets and groceries rarely make any money, John Ryan, retail expert and editor of Retail Week, told the audience Norwegian Seafood Summit 2014 in London, last week.
"No wetfish counter in supermarkets is making any money, as compared to the fresh meat counter," he said.
Nevertheless, having a fresh fish counter is "fairly standard," he said and not having one would be a competitive disadvantage compared to other retailers.
So what would be the best way to go about having a successful fresh fish counter? France was Ryan's favorite for a country that understands the concept of fresh fish counters, creating a "retail fish theater."
