Two of the United Kingdom’s major importers for the foodservice sector see vannamei shrimp increasingly taking over from the more traditional black tiger.
Black tiger is the shrimp of choice for the United Kingdom’s foodservice sector, particularly in the Asian foodservice business, where both Ruskim Seafoods and Nortrade Foods are large players.
The world’s major suppliers are all switching over to produce more vannamei, said John Grieg, managing director of Nortrade, which generates around 60 percent of its £36 million (€41.4 million/$56 million) turnover from sales into ethnic wholesalers in the United Kingdom - such as Wing Yip.
