Next month, the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will consider and adopt a new amendment draft to the Shrimp Fishery Management Plan (FMP) that could greatly impact the shrimp fishing industry.
Each year, fishing permits are permanently removed from the permit pool if it exceeds the one-year limit for renewal. That means that over time the permit pool narrows in the number of available fishing permits.
In 2007, there were 1,933 valid permits, and last year there were 1,470, according to the Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA).
