The loss of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label would have a significantly negative effect on the South African hake industry,” said Francois Kuttel, CEO of Johannesburg stock exchange listed Oceana Group.
Oceana is the largest South African fishing company in sales, although smaller in the hake business than Irvin and Johnson (I&J), Sea Harvest and Viking Fishing.
“It is our sincere hope that the necessary programs will be re-instated as a matter of urgency in order to ensure the ongoing robustness of our fisheries management,” Kuttel told IntraFish.
