Major fish feed producers, such as BioMar, Ewos and Skretting, need to start actively investing in those companies developing alternative proteins to fishmeal if the costs are to be brought down and large volumes produced, one exec urged.
OddGeir Oddsen, managing director at ProChaete Innovations, said major producers are currently only interested in buying alternatives to fishmeal when volumes are big enough and the price is low enough.
“It’s like chicken and the egg, before there is a demand it is difficult to producer big volumes and big volumes cannot be produced without a demand because there is a time delay and investment needed,” he told IntraFish.
