Alaska's most important commercial fishery opens to fishermen this week, with 21.7 million sockeye salmon expected to make it to market by the end of the season.

This Bristol Bay sockeye salmon harvest projection is relatively low compared to the past 20 years but similar to last year's harvest of 21.9 million fish, which ranked 14th out of the harvests spanning the last 20 years.

Fish had not arrived as of Monday, but they could arrive any day. Typically, sockeye arrive in Bristol Bay any time between June 17 and 20, a source familiar with the fishery told IntraFish.
