US fishing companies are looking for $3,500 (€2,800) for a metric ton of pin-bone-out (PBO) Alaska pollock, while continuing to produce increased volumes of deepskin and surimi blocks.
PBO production is down 23 percent, compared to the B-season of 2011.
IntraFish is hearing reports of one company in Europe committing at this price level, but most buyers are thought to be still holding off, hoping for a drop.
This is also increasing demand for twice-frozen Marine Stewardship Council (MSC)-certified pollock from China. In addition, it is raising suspicions Chinese plants could be using Russian pollock and selling it as US produce, something the MSC is investigating.
