The University of Maine is gearing up to introduce biodegradable golf balls made from lobster shells to the US market as early as this summer.

A US golf ball manufacturer is working with the university to test the performance and shelf sustainability of the product, which is intended for use on cruise ships. Guests can launch them into the sea without harming the environment, thanks to the ball's entirely biodegradeble -- and edible -- composition.

The lobster shells are ground into a powder before being bound together with an edible binding, molded and covered with an edible coating, David Neivandt, associate professor for the university’s Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, told IntraFish.
