Buyers of canned salmon in Europe hope more sockeye salmon will be available from the Bristol Bay run.

The Bristol Bay sockeye run, the largest in the world, is now open for fishing with a commercial forecast of 21.7 million fish.

Last year, around 60 percent of production was frozen, with the rest going into cans, said a buyer in Europe, who wished to be quoted unnamed.

The volume being canned has decreased over the last few years, because of good prices for the frozen product.
