Canadian firm Creative Salmon is the first farmed salmon producer in North America to receive organic certification, the company announced Monday.
Part of the company's farmed king salmon, produced in Tofino, British Columbia, is now certified under the Canadian Organic Aquaculture Standard.
The standard, first launched in May 2012, requires salmon have double the space in net pens as conventional farmed salmon; use no antifoulants on nets; and are raised using no antibiotics, pesticides or genetically modified organisms.
The organic certification applies to Creative Salmon’s Sea Spring Hatchery as well as Lions Gate Fisheries’ processing plants in both Tofino and Delta, British Columbia.
