Last year, Peru's two anchovy fisheries supplied 1.7 million metric tons of the total 5.5 million metric tons of global fishmeal production. The country is the largest single provider of fishmeal in the world. But in 2012, production is expected to drop 800,000 metric tons to 900,000, according to the International Fishmeal and Fish Oil Organization (IFFO).

"So clearly there is going to be a big reduction in fishmeal, and this is likely to mean that aquaculture will look to other protein sources," Andrew Jackson, technical director for the IFFO, told IntraFish.
