Cooke Aquaculture, the only company farming Atlantic salmon in Washington state, has applied to renew its water quality permits for four existing net pen operations. But the state's Department of Ecology said in a news release December 27 it is taking public comment on those four remaining permits for the next 60 days as it looks to increase scrutiny of the sites.

“We must protect our waters and native salmon from another disastrous collapse,” said Maia Bellon, director of ecology.
