Cooke subsidiary Omega Protein responded forcefully to an editorial accusing it of “buying its way to public respectability" with its support of the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of the US Atlantic menhaden fishery.

An editorial carried in Sport Fishing Magazine blasted the MSC process for the fishery's certification, claiming that the fishery was wrongly deemed sustainable.

"[Sports Fishing Editor] Doug Olander isn’t just wrong about the independence and integrity of the MSC process; he gets key facts wrong about the fishery, making wild, misleading claims," Omega Protein wrote in a response to the editorial.
