Canadian salmon farmer Cooke Aquaculture through its subsidiary Salmones Cupquelan acquired a 54 percent stake in Chilean salmon farmer Invermar for $20 million Wednesday, Cooke Vice President of Communications Nell Halse told IntraFish.

"We've been saying for some time we have been looking for opportunities in Chile," Halse said. "The opportunity to implement a vertical integration model there makes it a good fit."

Cupquelan has been contracting on both the hatchery and processing side, Halse noted. Invermar has hatchery and processing operations, as well as marine farming sites in Chile's Region 10.
