A recent UN Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) report illustrates the size of the Chinese seafood processing sector, geared around importing, processing and re-export.
It also indicates how this has been beneficial for fishing companies from around the world.
In 2011, Norway exported groundfish worth $1.9 billion, a new record.
The biggest increase was in exports of frozen whole fish to China for further processing, said the report.
China’s share of the EU market for whitefish fillets has grown dramatically over the past decade, from 8 percent of cod supplies to the EU in 2001 to 30 percent in 2011, it said.
