Market prices for farmed Chilean salmon in Japan have spiked in recent weeks following the massive algal bloom that claimed millions of fish.
Chilean coho prices are being quoted at JPY 670 (€5.27/$6) per kilo for 4-6 pound headed and gutted products, a hike of JPY 20 (€0.16/$0.18) within a week and nearly JPY 70-80 (€0.55/$0.63 - €0.63/$0.72) from early March.
Some major suppliers have reportedly stopped offering product in hopes prices could increase further.
The mortalities of Chilean coho from the algae are said to be around 7,000-8,000 metric tons based on projected harvest weight, but some estimates put coho losses as high as 20,000 metric tons.
