Chile could potentially produce 4 million metric tons of salmonids every year, providing all existing licenses are exploited fully, the country's Deputy Minister for aquaculture and fisheries Pablo Galilea told IntraFish at the Aqua Nor show in Trondheim last week.

Chile has 1,300 production licenses in total, but only one-third are operative.

In 2011 Galilea implied it would be realistic to achieve 1.5 million metric tons relatively swiftly.

In 2012, Chile produced more salmonids than ever before, but nonetheless the bottom line was still red in almost all company accounts.
