The intent of Norwegian aquaculture group Cermaq to expand in Chile is clear, but Norwegian firms and banks are not the only ones looking at deals in the sector, said Chilean executives.

Agribusiness groups from Peru and Chile’s wealthiest family are also eyeing expansion into aquaculture, as lower prices for Chilean salmon bring its salmon farmers down to more attractive prices, two senior executives with Chilean farmers, who both wished to be quoted unnamed, told IntraFish.

“The window for some consolidation is opened and it is likely to close again next year,” said the first executive, a member of the senior management team of a farmer.
