Toward the end of 2007, rumors began circulating in Chile about symptoms found in fish that closely resembled those of PD, one of the most devastating diseases in the seafood industry.

Chile’s Directorate of Fisheries (SERNAPESCA) hired the veterinary department at Austral University to take samples from farms in regions 9 and 10 -- in the sea, fresh water and value-added processing plants.

The investigation will run at least five months, according to Ricardo Enriquez, head of Austral University’s pathology institute.

A full-on outbreak of PD can result in up to 80 percent mortalities, the report said.
