Voters in Bristol Bay narrowly passed a ballot initiative barring the Pebble Mine project proposed for Bristol Bay from approval, officials of the Lake and Peninsula Borough announced late Monday.
The Lake and Peninsula Borough "Save Our Salmon" initiative won by 34 votes, with 280 for and 246 against, according to multiple news reports.
Local voters fear that the Pebble Mine would destroy the community’s way of life by desecrating the local salmon population, reported Bristol Bay fishing industry representatives at a rally against the mine in Seattle Monday night.
