Booming demand on the home market and a short supply of raw material is causing Brazilian shrimp importers to lobby the government to open up imports.

Imports of shrimp into Brazil have been banned since 1999 to protect the interests of the country’s domestic farmers.

The Brazilian shrimp industry was decimated by the disease whitespot in 2004 and the government took measures to allow it to regenerate, by protecting it from imports from other countries.

As Brazil’s economy has grown, so have its middle class and the demand for shrimp.
