Between 70 and 100 Icelandic fishing vessels sailed to the capital Reykjavik on Thursday to take part in the protest against the government’s plans to change taxation and management of the fishing sector, then set out to the fishing grounds in the evening.
However, the battle is far from over, industry sources told IntraFish.
The vessel owners made a smart move to protest and then head out fishing, said an executive from an Icelandic exporter, speaking on the promise of anonymity. “It gives the impression they really care, [while actually] they are not stopping fishing, but heading out again.”
