Wegmans announced last week it was adopting new shrimp purchasing standards it created while working with the environmental non-governmental organization (NGO) Environmental Defense (ED).

The new standards require suppliers to show their products are grown in a sustainable manner, with minimal environmental impact, and that workers are adequately compensated and treated with respect.

The 12 new purchasing standards require farmed shrimp producers to eliminate the use of antibiotics and other chemicals, avoid damaging sensitive habitats, treat their waste water and reduce the use of wild fish to feed shrimp.
