Last week, the Instituto del Mar del Peru (Imarpe) recommended not opening the country's second anchovy fishing season until stocks have recovered.
The decision formed part of a report following the completion of Operation Eureka LXVII, which found major changes in the marine environment due to the recurring impact of Kelvin waves.
Imarpe noted anchovy habitat has been significantly reduced and that a large portion of the anchovy in the Northern-Central region consisted of juveniles.
