The Alaska Bering Sea Crabbers say recent concerns over crab pots lost during the 2011/12 Bering Sea snow crab fishery season are not accurate or based in fact.
Lost crab pots in the Bering sea do not continue to “ghost fish” for an extended period of time, as some have alleged, the association said.
According to the association, the Alaska Board of Fisheries first addressed issues with crab pot gear in 1977, and currently, there are three regulations in particular that minimize the adverse affects of lost pots.
