Faroese salmon giant Bakkafrost is taking another step towards adding to its value chain with the construction of a 12,000-square-meter biogas factory that will convert salmon waste into energy, heat and fertilizer using a process of anaerobic digestion.

The factory, named "Forka," will be able to convert up to 50,000 metric tons of biowaste, half of which will be coming from cow manure, the rest from salmon waste, mainly feces, from onshore factories and hatcheries.

At present, the feces mainly comes from Bakkafrost's largest hatchery in Strond.
