Last week, the Faroese government adopted a new tax for the country's salmon farming industry, which will come into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.
Overall, the government aims to fetch an additional DKK 108 million (€14.5 million/$15.9 million) from the industry. It is adding a 4.5 percent surcharge on salmon when it's taken out of the water, based on the spot price at the time the salmon is slaughtered. In addition, it will take a 0.5 percent concession.
The aquaculture industry has reacted strongly to the news, saying the tax does not consider future price and market developments.
