With near-record harvests this year in Alaska as well as well as a lot of carry-over inventory from last year, moving product was a concern so Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) stepped up its efforts to push salmon into the market through different avenues.

"Pink and sockeye salmon returns were especially strong; the number of harvested pink salmon came close to the 2013 record year, and sockeye salmon harvests are among the top 10 of all time," said ADF&G.

Salmon accounts for a quarter to a third of the state's exports with China as the largest trading partner, but the final market is mainly the EU and Japan.
