As of next year, the Chilean salmon industry will be governed by a new food ministry, removing the country's aquaculture and fisheries department from its present home in the ministry for trade and tourism and giving it a home alongside agriculture.

To be called the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (Ministerio de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentos), a proposal for its establishment will be presented this year to the National Assembly by Chilean President, Sebastian Pinera.

In September 2011 when IntraFish interviewed the deputy minister for fisheries, Pablo Galilea, he was campaigning for the establishment of a separate ministry for fisheries and aquaculture.
