The fish grows significantly faster than normal salmon and has a higher feed conversion ratio, company officials have said, using a transplanted gene from another fish.
The company has said it will also look to South America and Asia as potential markets for its GM fish, which also may eventually include tilapia and carp.
Aqua Bounty's drive to commercially produce GM fish has faced stiff opposition from environmentalists and even members of the aquaculture industry.
