According to Kontali's latest monthly salmon report on July 23, Chile exported more than 21,000 metric tons of Atlantic salmon in May.

This is around two-thirds of exports in 2008, “but nonetheless stronger than expected. Even though part of the volume came from frozen stores, this just indicates that the decline in the second half of the year will be even more substantial,” the firm said.

Kontali estimates Chilean supply of Atlantic for all of 2009 to end up at just under 170,000 metric tons, a reduction of almost 60 percent compared with last year, when almost 400,000 metric tons was slaughtered -- the highest slaughter figure ever registered for Atlantic salmon in South America.
