Final Alaska salmon catch numbers showed that king salmon harvests were the only species to beat forecasts, but all other species were off by 11 percent or more from Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) projections for the 2011 season, according to numbers compiled by consulting group Nickinovich & Associates.

Nickinovich's results show catches of sockeye salmon, one of the most valuable species caught in Alaska, were down just slightly – 2 percent – from last year. But in Bristol Bay, the state's most important sockeye salmon producing region, harvests were down 23 percent from both the 2011 forecast and last year’s catch.
