A 4 percent increase in quota is just one positive sign for next year’s Bering Sea pollock harvest.

“Next year should be a good year for fishing,” Jim Ianelli, stock assessment scientist for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries, told IntraFish.

The 2008 year class -- both which was exceptionally strong in number of fish -- is now reaching optimum harvest sizes, Ianelli said. It is at the optimal age of 5 years old, when fish tend to be at their most valuable size, Ianelli said.

Fishermen
