An executive from the At-sea Processors Association (APA), the industry body representing parts of the US pollock fishery, shares some of the frustrations that saw the Alaska salmon fishery state it will not continue assessment from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).
“I understand the frustrations of the Alaska salmon producers with the MSC,” Jim Gilmore, director of public affairs with APA, told IntraFish. “As a fishery client, Alaska pollock certainly shares many of those frustrations.”
Alaska pollock’s circumstances differ, however, in that the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands and Gulf of Alaska pollock fisheries do not face reassessment until 2015, whereas Alaska salmon had to decide now whether to enter full reassessment, he said.
