In the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho in southern Africa, one company is successfully producing premium quality freshwater trout, and has plans to steadily increase its volumes year-on-year in a bid to build new markets.

Six years of project planning, biological and environmental studies culminated in Highlands Trout receiving a license to produce in Katse Dam in June 2011.

Cape Town-based Pure Ocean Aquaculture holds a 90 percent stake in the company while Advance Africa holds the remaining 10 percent.

Pure Ocean Aquaculture is responsible for the general management and runs the operations, and Advance Africa’s role included the development of the financial model, the business plan, securing of investment, project management of the pre-development phase, including the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and construction phase.
