The seven Alaska salmon giants that withdrew from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) on Tuesday plan to swap the sustainability certification process they helped make famous for a new one.
The Alaska Seafood Market Institute will now offer the Global Trust certification, which is based upon the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) standards, to its Alaska salmon companies, rather than the MSC certification. That also means switching assessors, from Intertek Moody Marine, which was the assessor used under the MSC certification process, to a Global Trust certifier, ASMI Executive Director Ray Riutta told IntraFish.
