Consultancy firm PwC is pouring cold water on hopes that Norway could produce 5 million tons of farmed salmon by 2050.

"Based on developments over the past three years, we believe that it is still unlikely that the seafood nation Norway will reach the vision of an aquaculture production of 5 million tons in 2050 with current regulation," the firm said its latest report, The Seafood Barometer (Norwegian).

PwC estimates production could reach 3.7 million metric tons three decades down the road, but notes multiple mitigating factors will be at play -- some unforseen.
