Alaska whitefish producers and processors are monitoring what they see as a real and growing threat from the emergence of plant-based and cell-based seafood in the market.

The Alaska whitefish sector has been aware of the issue for some time, although it is unclear how plant-based companies will be allowed to sell their products amid controversy over whether it should even be labeled as seafood.

All the same, industry participants speaking at the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) All Hands Virtual Conference this week expect increasing numbers of products such as plant-based shrimp and tuna will keep them on their toes in the years ahead.
