Back in 2016 when President Trump moved into the White House, Commerce Department Secretary Wilbur Ross tossed out the bold idea that the United States might become a net exporter of seafood, in light of the new administration’s America-first approach to global politics and trade.
A tall task indeed when you consider that the United States imports between 80 to 90 percent of the seafood it consumes.
"Given the enormity of our coastlines, given the enormity of our freshwater, I would like to try to figure out how we can become much more self-sufficient in fishing and perhaps even a net exporter," he said in January during his confirmation hearing.
